Speak Up for the Promise Act and the Cherish Act

Bills now pending in the Legislature offer a once-in-a-generation chance to win major funding increases for our public schools and colleges. Together, the Promise Act (S.238/H.586) and the Cherish Act (S.741/H.1214) would mean an additional $1.5 billion per year in state funding to support students and public education in Massachusetts.

It is urgent that you contact your state senator and representative to voice your support for both of these pieces of legislation.

If you don’t know who your state legislators are, look them up here:

If your legislators co-sponsored the bills, thank them for their work supporting public education. If they haven’t yet sponsored the bills ask them to take this key step to close the funding gap for schools and universities in Massachusetts.

Phone Script:

The following is a phone script you can use to call your legislators. Please feel free to modify it, but be sure to mention the bill names and numbers.

Hello, I am trying to reach Representative/Senator _______ to talk about two crucial bills to support students and public education in Massachusetts.

Once connected to the appropriate legislator or staff member:

Hi, my name is __________ and I live in ________ (name of your community).

I am calling to ask you to contact the chairs of the Joint Committee on Education to express your support for the Promise Act (S.238/H.586) and the chairs of the Joint Committee on Higher Education to express your support for the Cherish Act (S.741/H.1214).

The Promise Act was heard before the Education Committee in March — and it is vital for the committee to understand the importance of updating the public school funding formula and need for the resources that the Promise Act will provide to our students and our communities.

I also ask that you support the Cherish Act, which was heard by the Higher Education Committee on April 30, 2019. The legislation will reaffirm the state’s commitment to fully funding our public colleges and universities.

Thank you — and I hope you will support the Promise Act and the Cherish Act.
